In his posthumous memoir, My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, Dane addressed the end of his tenure as plastic surgeon Mark Sloan. He acknowledged that his personal battles did not bolster his standing with the production, yet he maintained that creator Shonda Rhimes informed him his time was up at the end of Season 8 because he had become too expensive to retain. Despite the popularity of the character known as McSteamy, the actor concluded that he had become expendable to the network.
Reflecting on his time on the series, Dane described a complex relationship with the role that provided his career breakthrough. Before landing the part in 2005, he had been considering leaving the industry entirely. While he struggled with painkiller addiction—including five stints in rehab and visible physical tolls—he noted that his colleagues and Rhimes offered support rather than judgment. By the time his character perished following the show’s infamous plane crash, Dane felt he had already mined every nuance of Mark Sloan and was ready to move on, even if he initially struggled to leave the security of the series behind.
