Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos Delay Rescue Dog Arrival Over Health Issue

A parasite diagnosis has temporarily halted the homecoming of Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ latest family addition, forcing the couple to keep their new rescue dog in medical care. While the pup awaits a clean bill of health, the hosts remain locked in a playful debate over his permanent name.

The couple announced the adoption on "Live with Kelly and Mark" following the dog’s appearance during the show’s Adopt a Dog Week. Originally named Lucas by Pet ResQ Inc., the dog was brought onto the set by Consuelos on October 12, who immediately bonded with the animal. Despite the excitement, Ripa confirmed on October 18 that the transition to their New York City home must wait until the parasite treatment is complete.

While coordinating the medical care, the couple has also been navigating the naming process. Consuelos initially gravitated toward "Javi"—a nod to his suspicion that the dog has Havanese ancestry—while Ripa has advocated for retaining the name Lucas. Their three adult children have attempted to weigh in on the decision, though Ripa has firmly dismissed their influence, noting that because they no longer live at home, they have no vote in the matter. The new arrival is expected to join the family, including their Maltese/Shih Tzu mix Lena, once he is cleared by veterinarians.
