Waititi candidly addressed the status of the production in a recent interview with Inverse, noting that he is currently juggling approximately four other films. While the director previously expressed a desire to capture the adventurous spirit of the original trilogy, he admitted that the project has been put on ice. Despite the indefinite pause, Waititi left the door slightly ajar for a future return, remarking that even ice ages eventually come to an end.
The shelving of the film follows a period of uncertainty regarding its development. Former Lucasfilm executive Kathleen Kennedy had previously indicated that a script was submitted, describing the work as hilarious and promising. However, with Lucasfilm shifting its strategic focus, the project has been sidelined in favor of other endeavors, including Shawn Levy’s upcoming Starfighter, which is slated for a May 2027 release. This shift mirrors other recent cancellations, such as the proposed Hunt for Ben Solo project, which was reportedly rejected by Disney executives despite interest from Adam Driver and director Steven Soderbergh.
