The actor’s transformation for Baywatch remains his most notorious physical endeavor. To achieve a physique he later described as CGI-like and unattainable, Efron combined 4 a.m. workouts with a restrictive diet and the use of Lasix, a prescription diuretic. The toll was severe: he suffered from insomnia, burnout, and a prolonged period of depression after filming concluded. Efron has since cautioned against viewing that aesthetic as a healthy benchmark, noting that maintaining such low body fat is not a sustainable way to live.
Years later, his preparation for The Iron Claw took a different path. Rather than chasing a lean, shredded look, he focused on adding 15 pounds of muscle to embody professional wrestler Kevin Von Erich. This role demanded months of high-volume training and grueling choreography practice under the guidance of consultant Chavo Guerrero Jr. While the aesthetic goal differed from his previous work, the intensity of the physical output remained high.
These varied experiences have fundamentally altered Efron’s approach to fitness. Moving away from the short-term, extreme goals of his earlier career, he now prioritizes longevity, mobility, and recovery. His current routine incorporates yoga, ice baths, and careful attention to nutrition, signaling a shift toward protecting his health over chasing a specific cinematic look. For Efron, the most significant transformation has been learning to distinguish between athletic performance and genuine physical well-being.
