The District of Columbia saw the most significant improvement, with reports dropping 52% compared to the same period in 2025, though it retains the highest theft rate in the country at 181.94 per 100,000 residents.

While most metropolitan areas followed the national downward trend, the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin area stands as a notable exception, reporting a 2% increase in thefts. California continues to lead in total volume, with 57,821 vehicles stolen statewide, and the Bakersfield-Delano metro area maintains the highest regional theft rate at 223.28 per 100,000 people. NICB Chief Operating Officer Tim Slater emphasized that while the data is encouraging, motorists should remain cautious, as organized crime groups have increasingly pivoted toward sophisticated insurance fraud and other vehicle-related schemes.
