Big Green House Returns to the National Mall for HUD Housing Showcase

The "Big Green House" stands as the centerpiece of the 2026 Innovative Housing Showcase, hosted by the Department of Housing and Urban Development. By moving beyond theoretical blueprints, the exhibit allows policymakers and industry professionals to inspect the roof trusses, floor panels, and wall systems that define modern componentized framing. These elements are manufactured in controlled, offsite environments before being delivered to construction sites, a process that can reduce framing timelines to as little as 8–12 hours.

With more than 1,300 manufacturing facilities currently operating across the United States, the infrastructure for this building method is already mature. Sean Shields, Director of Strategic Partnerships at the SBCA, notes that the showcase aims to prove the scalability of these systems for both single-family and multi-family projects. Beyond the physical structure, the association is participating in educational sessions, including a panel on September 23 focused on strategies to expand the national housing supply. The installation remains open to the public on the National Mall between 7th and 12th Streets through September 24.
