A Century at West Point: The Thayer Hotel Marks 100 Years

Perched above the Hudson River at the gateway to the United States Military Academy, The Thayer Hotel is marking a century of service. Since its 1926 debut, the landmark has evolved from a local dream into a silent witness to American history, hosting military legends and pivotal moments of diplomacy.

The hotel’s legacy is woven into the fabric of the Academy. During World War II, it earned the nickname the General’s Hotel, serving as a tactical hub for commanders including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur, and George S. Patton. Its historical significance extends to the modern era; in 1981, the 52 Americans released from captivity in Iran stayed on-site for three days of recovery and reunion. A signed menu from that visit remains on display, serving as a testament to the property’s role as a sanctuary for those in transition.

Named for Sylvanus Thayer, the 1808 graduate recognized as the father of the Military Academy, the hotel remains a focal point for the West Point community. Managing general partner Rick Minicozzi noted that the centennial coincides with a yearlong restoration of guest rooms, intended to bridge the property’s storied past with its current mission as a center for leadership development. To mark the milestone, the hotel has launched a series of commemorative initiatives, including a New Year’s Eve gala featuring a menu inspired by the original 1926 opening, alongside specialized wedding and overnight packages that invite visitors to engage with the landmark’s long-standing traditions.
