Masseto Debuts 2023 Vintage from Bolgheri Blue Clay

Nature set us a challenge, which we embraced, turning it into value, says Marco Balsimelli, Technical Director of Masseto. As the estate prepares to release its 2023 vintage on October 1, the winery highlights a growing season marked by spring rains and a temperate summer that preserved acidity and aromatic complexity.

The 2023 harvest, which spanned from September 6 to October 5, relied on the unique characteristics of the Bolgheri estate. Rooted in rare Pliocene-era blue clay, the vines benefited from a mild winter and a slow ripening process. According to Balsimelli, the absence of extreme heat during the summer months allowed the fruit to develop depth while retaining a vibrant energy. The grapes were hand-harvested into 15-kilogram crates and processed in the estate's gravity-fed winery, where each parcel underwent separate vinification to preserve individual character.

Following 24 months of aging in 80 percent new oak barriques, the resulting wine displays a deep ruby hue. Tasting notes describe a profile defined by juicy dark fruit, black pepper, tobacco, and graphite. On the palate, the vintage balances smooth tannins with significant lift, reflecting the careful management of the vineyard's water reserves during the spring. This release continues the legacy of the estate, which has produced its signature wine from the same hillside since 1986.
