Community Banks View Fintechs as Primary Competitive Threat

For the first time, community bank leaders rank fintech firms as a more significant competitive threat than major national banks. According to the 2026 Technology Survey from Bank Director, 58% of respondents identify companies like Block and PayPal as top rivals, signaling a shift in the traditional banking hierarchy.

This heightened concern stems from a regulatory environment increasingly open to non-bank players. With firms like PayPal, Affirm, and Coinbase pursuing charters, established institutions face pressure to modernize their infrastructure. Emily McCormick, vice president of research at Bank Director, notes that nearly a third of leaders feel their current payments offering is inadequate, creating a vulnerability that agile fintechs are eager to exploit.

Despite these competitive anxieties, many banks remain slow to adapt their long-term strategies. Seventy percent of surveyed institutions lack a formal plan to engage Gen Z, the demographic currently driving deposit attrition and small-business banking shifts. While 76% of banks focus on technology primarily to improve internal efficiency, the lack of a cohesive approach to younger accountholders suggests a disconnect between operational goals and market survival.

Technological integration remains a persistent hurdle, cited by 69% of leaders as a top concern. Even as 72% of banks implement generative AI for operations or compliance, the difficulty of syncing new tools with legacy systems continues to result in project failures. Furthermore, while institutions are skeptical of crypto, viewing 79% of cryptocurrency as overhyped, they remain under pressure to prepare for the 2027 implementation of the GENIUS Act, which mandates new standards for payment stablecoins.
