Throughout his life, the Star Trek icon frequently looked back at his early years with the Royal Shakespeare Company with a sense of profound remorse. Married to Sheila Falconer in 1966, Stewart spent much of his children’s formative years tethered to his work, later confessing that his own obsession with performance left little room for the nuances of fatherhood. By the time he reached his later years, he spoke openly about the distance that had grown between him and his adult children, Daniel and Sophie.
While Stewart found a measure of solace in his four grandchildren—attempting to offer the emotional presence he felt he had denied his own children—the rift remained a source of persistent sorrow. In his 2023 memoir, Making It So, he candidly addressed the reality that, despite his hopes for reconciliation, his relationships with his children remained largely unresolved. He passed away on October 28 at age 86, following a battle with Alzheimer’s and Lewy body dementia, leaving behind a complex legacy where immense public triumph was shadowed by the weight of personal regret.
