Macklemore Removed From Ed Sheeran Tour After Gaza Comments

Benjamin Haggerty, known as Macklemore, has been removed as the opening act for Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour following intense backlash over his pro-Palestine remarks. The decision, driven by venue owners including Robert Kraft, has ignited a sharp debate regarding the intersection of celebrity influence, political expression, and concert venue policies.

The rapper’s dismissal stems from a performance in early September where he chanted in support of Palestine. According to reports, concert promoters warned that venues would cancel dates if the artist remained on the lineup. Macklemore revealed that Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, refused to host the show unless the rapper was excluded, allegedly rallying other stadium owners to adopt a similar stance. While Macklemore described his conversations with Sheeran as respectful despite their fundamental disagreements, he criticized the pressure placed on the pop star to remain apolitical.

Kraft confirmed he blocked the performance, citing his belief that the rapper’s comments were offensive to the Jewish community and failed to account for the actions of Hamas. Meanwhile, the decision has drawn significant criticism toward Sheeran, with activists and fellow artists accusing him of silencing free speech to protect his financial interests. High-profile figures including Rosie O’Donnell, Paloma Faith, and the band Garbage have publicly defended Macklemore, arguing that his rhetoric was neither violent nor radical. In response to the fallout, Kraft has extended an offer to meet with the rapper to discuss the complexities of the conflict, while Macklemore maintains that his criticism of Israeli policy is distinct from antisemitism.
