U.S. Congressional Delegation Honored in Kyiv Amidst Russian Attacks

The group included Senators Alan Armstrong, John Curtis, and Thom Tillis, alongside Representatives Don Bacon, Salud Carbajal, Wesley Bell, Jim Costa, and Eugene Vindman. Rye Barcott, CEO of the veteran-led advocacy group With Honor, also received the award. During their stay, members toured sites recently struck by Russian missiles and met with frontline medics in Kharkiv. The trip was punctuated by the threat of ongoing hostilities; a Russian drone struck a rail line near the Polish border shortly after a train carrying officials from Kyiv passed through the same area.

The delegation is now pushing for the House of Representatives to pass the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act. The bill, which cleared the Senate in August with a bipartisan 86-11 vote, faces mounting pressure from proponents who argue that delaying the legislation allows Russia to continue funding its military through oil sales. Beyond sanctions, lawmakers are urging the Department of Defense to expedite the use of $400 million in appropriated funds for European capacity building. These resources are intended to purchase American-made weapons and equipment for Ukrainian forces before the onset of winter.

Senator Thom Tillis emphasized that the Ukrainian government is seeking tools to conclude the conflict rather than direct American combat involvement. Representative Don Bacon, a retired Air Force brigadier general, noted that the visit served as a reminder of the necessity of maintaining democratic alliances. Representative Eugene Vindman echoed these sentiments, highlighting the urgency of cutting off the financial lifelines supporting the Russian drone and missile campaigns that continue to target Ukrainian infrastructure.
