Village Super Market automates inventory tracking with computer vision

Village Super Market has implemented a new computer vision module from Focal Systems designed to track inventory stored above retail shelves. The technology, known as Top Stock, eliminates the need for manual audits and ladder climbs by providing store associates with real-time, hourly data on hidden stock levels.

During a one-month pilot, the retailer identified $24,000 in previously unaccounted inventory, proving that significant stock was failing to reach the replenishment workflow. By digitizing these high-up storage areas, the store reduced weekly audit labor by 75%, cutting the time required from four hours to just one. Additionally, the night crew saved ten hours per week, while on-shelf availability improved by 1% over the existing 97% baseline.

Top Stock integrates with Focal’s existing Action Tool to map inventory locations and generate prioritized replenishment tasks. This prevents staff from breaking down cases prematurely by ensuring the system only triggers restocking when shelf space is physically available. Bob Belsky, Senior VP at Village Supermarkets, noted that the immediate discovery of lost inventory and the subsequent reduction in manual labor made the decision to expand the system straightforward for the company.
