Evan Rachel Wood Expresses Regret Over Practical Magic 2 Recasting

Despite offering to return for the long-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult classic Practical Magic, Evan Rachel Wood says she was never invited to reprise her role as Kylie Owens. The actress, who was 11 during the original production, admitted to feeling sad about the exclusion while wishing the new cast well.

Wood played the eldest daughter of Sandra Bullock’s character in the original film but will be replaced by Joey King in the upcoming project. Maisie Williams has also been cast to play the role of Antonia, originally portrayed by Alexandra Atrip. Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Wood noted that the filmmakers opted for a narrative direction that she believes rendered her return unnecessary, despite her willingness to appear in even a minor capacity.

The sequel is reportedly based on Alice Hoffman’s fourth book in the series, The Book of Magic, which concludes the Owens family saga. Wood previously addressed the recasting on Instagram in July 2025, confirming that the decision was entirely out of her control. While she has not maintained contact with her former co-stars, she recalled a childhood crush on Sandra Bullock, describing her as a fantastic presence on set.

Joey King and Maisie Williams have spoken about the pressure of joining the franchise, noting that both Bullock and Nicole Kidman have been supportive mentors. King revealed that the veterans have helped ease the transition, with Bullock even sending encouraging text messages to the new cast members. Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to hit theaters this September.
