Honey Badger Silver Inc., which holds a 100% interest in the Nunavut-based project, is pivoting to investigate the massive pyrite systems and zinc-lead mineralization left behind during the mine’s original operation. The site, which produced 17.9 million tonnes of ore between 1976 and 2002, contains extensive pyrite bodies—a primary source of industrial sulphur. With supply chain disruptions in the Middle East driving sulphur prices to historic highs, these previously ignored waste zones now present a potential economic opportunity.
The project’s value proposition has been further bolstered by the global scramble for germanium. As China tightens export controls on the metal—a critical component for semiconductors and solar technology—the geological profile of the Nanisivik district has become increasingly relevant. Because the site is a Mississippi Valley Type deposit, it shares a structural architecture with regions where germanium is actively confirmed. Honey Badger Silver intends to use new assay techniques to test current samples, aiming to verify the presence of the metal alongside its existing silver-zinc-lead targets.
While historic estimates suggest a pyrite system of 50 to 100 million tonnes, management emphasizes that these figures remain non-compliant with current NI 43-101 standards. The company’s immediate work plan focuses on metallurgical characterization and environmental assessments of these zones. Success here would complement the firm's broader portfolio, including the recently acquired PC Silver Mine in the Northwest Territories, as it attempts to bridge the gap between historic exploration and modern geopolitical demand.
