Shaquille O’Neal pivots to true crime with Game Day Murders

O’Neal, who describes himself as a true crime junkie, pointed to American Murder: The Family Next Door as a particularly visceral experience. Watching Chris Watts deceive authorities while hiding the bodies of his wife and daughters at an oil-storage site left the star feeling an urge to jump through the television screen. He also closely followed the trial of Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina legal scion convicted of murdering his wife and son, noting that the unpredictability of real-world crime stands in stark contrast to the scripted arcs of classic sports films like Rocky.

His new six-episode series, Game Day Murders, seeks to bridge his two primary interests. Hosted by Lindsay Czarniak, the project explores the darker side of athletics, beginning with the 2003 murder of Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy. O’Neal insists the goal is to honor the victims’ legacies rather than sensationalize the violence. The show is scheduled to cover additional high-profile sports tragedies involving figures such as Mike Danton, Lorenzen Wright, and Sean Taylor, airing Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery.
