Johan Cruijff ArenA debuts Dutch football’s first autonomous bar

Fans at the Johan Cruijff ArenA can now bypass traditional queues using a new checkout-free bar, which debuted during the July 26 match between Ajax and Burnley. The kiosk uses AI-driven tracking to monitor product selection, automatically processing payments once visitors tap their smartphones upon entry to the space.

Located on the stadium's second ring, the facility—branded as Bar14—represents a shift in how Dutch sports venues manage peak-hour catering. Developed in partnership with Levy Europe, the system relies on sensors to log each item a customer removes from the shelves. The technology underwent rigorous testing during the venue’s recent concert season, where it handled over 12,000 patrons and dispensed more than 17,000 drinks.

Rak Kalidas, Chief Creative Officer at Levy, noted that the objective is to reclaim time for match-goers by removing friction from the purchasing process. By automating the transaction layer, the stadium aims to establish a new operational standard for hospitality in the Netherlands, moving away from conventional service models to prioritize speed and digital convenience.
