Appearing on the La Culturistas podcast in July 2026, the pop star explained that the album’s poor performance was the exact mechanism required to secure her exit. Unlike her previous string of top-ten hits, which included global successes like TikTok, the lackluster commercial response to Gag Order ultimately provided the leverage needed to walk away from Kemosabe Records. She noted that while she personally cherished the creative process behind the record, she recognized its role as the final obligation in a long-standing legal battle.
This departure marked the end of a professional relationship that began in 2005 and was later defined by accusations of sexual assault, battery, and emotional abuse. Following her release from the label in December 2023, Kesha also amicably parted ways with longtime manager Jack Rovner, opting for a fresh start. The project debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart, signaling a successful pivot to creative independence that she is now celebrating on her ongoing Freedom Tour.
