Tomei shared a statement via Instagram from the 1A Committee, a group that characterizes the recent backlash against Ruffalo as a cynical attempt to silence dissent. The committee argued that the actor’s critique of the proposed Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery merger is a legitimate exercise of his platform to fight for free speech and democratic values. They explicitly warned against the revival of blacklisting tactics within the industry.

The conflict ignited when Ruffalo shared content from the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement, labeling the war in Gaza a genocide supported by Oracle’s technological infrastructure. Because Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is providing significant financing for his son David Ellison’s acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, Ruffalo cast the move as a dangerous consolidation of power by an oligarch. Paramount representatives responded by condemning Ruffalo’s rhetoric, asserting that invoking terms like genocide and apartheid in a business dispute constitutes the use of harmful antisemitic tropes.

Ruffalo maintains that his opposition is strictly political and focused on corporate accountability rather than prejudice. His stance has drawn sharp condemnation from a coalition of nearly 1,000 industry insiders known as The Brigade, including producers Haim Saban and Lawrence Bender. This group argues that Ruffalo’s focus on Jewish executives relies on centuries-old conspiracy theories regarding wealth-hoarding and power.
