Shu Uemura debuts AI-powered beauty mirrors in Tokyo flagship

Stepping into the new shu:ARTstage flagship store in Omotesando Hills, customers encounter more than just reflective glass. Shu Uemura has integrated Loook.ai technology into its mirrors, transforming a passive vanity surface into an interactive diagnostic tool that performs 3D facial scanning to generate personalized makeup recommendations.

The scanning process initiates via a digital interface designed to mimic a makeup brush. As users engage with the display, the system maps facial geometry, analyzing ratios, feature balance, and specific contours. This data culminates in a personalized facial ID summary, offering tailored advice on brow shaping or contouring techniques. Rather than replacing human interaction, the system serves as a bridge, directing customers to book consultations with onsite makeup artists to apply the software’s technical insights.

Jaron Chan, the brand’s International Brand General Manager, describes the installation as a continuation of the company's commitment to artistic innovation, positioning the technology as a fusion of digital precision and traditional artistry. Nika Mantyka, co-founder of Loook.ai, emphasizes that the goal was to enhance an existing daily routine rather than impose an unfamiliar behavior on the consumer. The mirrors are now a permanent fixture at the Omotesando location, with plans to introduce QR-based digital cards that allow users to save and share their personalized beauty analysis.
