Palmetto Debuts Subscription Model to Slash Home Battery Costs

With four million U.S. solar installations currently vulnerable to grid failure, Palmetto is moving to bridge the resilience gap. The Charlotte-based energy platform launched a subscription-based battery backup plan today, aiming to bypass the heavy capital outlays that have historically kept residential energy storage out of reach for many households.

The new Energy Backup Plan eliminates the traditional upfront costs, which often exceed $16,000 for standard battery systems. Instead, homeowners pay a recurring monthly fee for a 12-year hardware subscription. Palmetto manages all maintenance and repairs, positioning the offering as a service rather than a capital-intensive purchase. Customers can configure their backup reserve levels through the company’s mobile app, allowing them to utilize stored energy to offset peak utility rates or ensure power availability during severe weather events.

For the company’s network of dealers and partners, the subscription structure functions as a sales accelerator. By removing the financial barrier of ownership, partners can re-engage existing solar customers or bundle the battery as an immediate upgrade. According to CEO Chris Kemper, the model addresses a critical misunderstanding among solar users, many of whom mistakenly believe their arrays provide power during grid outages. The service is currently active in 25 states, providing a path toward energy independence that relies on operational flexibility rather than large-scale personal investment.
