Restoring the Prairie at the New Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library

A two-acre walkable green roof and 400,000 native plants now define the landscape of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in Medora, North Dakota. Opened on July 4, 2026, the project serves as a living tribute to the 26th president’s commitment to environmental stewardship and conservation.

Resource Environmental Solutions (RES) spearheaded the ecological restoration, hand-planting over 100 regional species to integrate the facility with the surrounding North Dakota prairie. The firm established a dedicated seed bank, sourcing material from sites near Roosevelt’s historic ranches to ensure genetic continuity for future regional restoration efforts. This landscape design is central to the library's pursuit of Living Building Challenge certification, the world's most rigorous green building standard.

Beyond aesthetics, the site functions as a carbon-neutral infrastructure project. The grounds manage 100% of stormwater on-site, cutting potable water demand in half. By blending architectural design with native ecology, the project aims to serve as both a public gallery and a functional training ground for environmental leadership. CEO Roger Wiederkehr described the work as a tangible connection to Roosevelt’s legacy, designed to provide ecological uplift for generations.
