The production, directed by Tony Award-winner Bartlett Sher, is scheduled to begin previews on December 7 at New York City’s St. James Theatre. The official opening is set for January 19, 2027, coinciding with Parton’s 81st birthday. Following a record-breaking run at Nashville’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, the show aims to move beyond the performer's public image to explore her formative years in the Smoky Mountains.
Parton described the project as her most personal work to date, emphasizing that the script details the struggles and triumphs that preceded her global fame. The score will feature a blend of her most iconic hits, such as Jolene and I Will Always Love You, alongside new compositions written specifically for the stage. This transition to theater follows a series of health setbacks, including immune and digestive system complications, which forced the artist to cancel a planned Las Vegas residency. While those medical issues necessitated a break from traditional touring, the Broadway project offers a new venue for her storytelling.
