Gaza Bombing Campaign Among Most Destructive in Modern History

With the Palestinian death toll in Gaza surpassing 20,000, warfare experts are classifying the 10-week Israeli aerial campaign as one of the most intense and lethal civilian punishment operations of the 21st century, eclipsing the scale of destruction seen in recent urban conflicts like the battle for Mosul.

Health officials in Gaza report that 20,057 Palestinians have been killed since the conflict began, with women and children accounting for approximately 70% of all fatalities. Experts note that the sheer density of the bombardment—often utilizing 2,000-pound bunker-buster bombs—has fundamentally altered the urban landscape. Satellite analysis suggests that roughly one-third of all buildings across the strip have been destroyed, with that figure rising to over two-thirds in northern Gaza.

Comparing Modern Conflict Intensity

Military historians, including Robert Pape of the University of Chicago, suggest the campaign ranks in the top quartile of the most devastating bombing efforts in history. While the U.S.-led coalition assault on Mosul in 2017 resulted in roughly 10,000 civilian deaths, the current campaign in Gaza has surpassed that toll in a fraction of the time. Marc Garlasco, a former Pentagon official, noted that the intensity of these strikes—often conducted in proximity to critical civilian infrastructure—represents a level of bombardment not seen since the Vietnam War.

Despite criticism from international observers regarding the use of heavy ordnance in densely populated areas, the campaign continues to rely on munitions supplied by the United States. While the Biden administration has publicly called for more precise targeting to reduce civilian harm, it simultaneously continues to provide the IDF with the same 1,000 and 2,000-pound bombs currently being deployed. Independent analysts argue that the reliance on such heavy weaponry, coupled with AI-driven target selection, has institutionalized a high tolerance for civilian collateral damage that deviates significantly from standard U.S. military doctrine.
