Lidl GB expands self-scanning trial to 37 new locations

Shoppers across Scotland and the South of England can now bypass traditional queues as Lidl GB rolls out its Lidl & Go self-scanning technology to 37 additional stores. The move follows a successful seven-store pilot, signaling a broader shift toward smartphone-integrated checkout experiences across the discounter's UK footprint.

The Lidl & Go feature, embedded directly into the Lidl Plus app, allows users to scan items as they navigate aisles, providing real-time tracking of both basket totals and accumulated savings. By removing the need for dedicated handheld scanners, the retailer aims to streamline the shopping experience, a benefit noted as particularly popular among parents and time-conscious customers.

Louise Weise, Chief Customer Officer at Lidl GB, described the initial feedback as encouraging, highlighting that users appreciate the granular control over their spending and the ability to dictate their own shopping pace. This expansion is part of a wider digital push for the company, which recently introduced a flexible rewards system through its Lidl Points initiative. As the trial progresses through July, the company intends to refine the service based on ongoing user data and store-level performance.
