Alanis Morissette on the Lasting Sting of Her 2007 Split

Alanis Morissette on the Lasting Sting of Her 2007 Split

Nearly two decades after her engagement to Ryan Reynolds ended, Alanis Morissette is re-evaluating the public scrutiny she endured during the aftermath. Reflecting on a resurfaced 2008 interview with Howard Stern, the singer describes the experience as a painful normalization of the disrespect often directed toward women in the media.

Morissette recently told The Sunday Times Style that the invasive questioning she faced during that era would not be tolerated today. She recalled the pressure to discuss her heartbreak and personal life, noting that she would now feel empowered to push back against such inappropriate inquiries. At the time of the 2007 breakup, the media fixation was so intense that Morissette attended therapy five times a week to process the emotional toll, a detail she famously defended as a personal journey rather than a reaction to her former partner.

The couple, who began dating in 2002 and became engaged two years later, were among Hollywood’s most prominent figures before their split. While Reynolds eventually married Scarlett Johansson and later Blake Lively, Morissette found a different path, marrying rapper Souleye—born Mario Treadway—in 2010. She credits her husband for offering the understanding and acceptance she lacked in previous years.

Beyond the breakup, Morissette discussed her identity as a highly sensitive person. She admitted to struggling with work and love addiction as she searched for ways to regulate her emotions. After years of feeling misunderstood and isolated, she now finds herself in a place of greater self-acceptance, noting that while the journey was painful, she has finally reached a point where she feels grounded in her own narrative.
