Joseph Perrulli Recalls Life with Nicole Brown Simpson

Thirty years after the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson, her former partner Joseph Perrulli is detailing the pervasive climate of fear surrounding her marriage to O.J. Simpson. In his new book, The Forgotten Briefcase, Perrulli describes the alleged abuse as an open secret in Hollywood that left those around her feeling powerless.

Perrulli, who dated Nicole in 1992 following her separation from the NFL star, claims industry figures frequently warned him about the violence she endured. He describes a period where Simpson’s immense fame and corporate influence as a spokesperson for Hertz rendered him untouchable, even as Nicole confided in him about severe beatings and constant terror for her safety. Perrulli recalls that he felt forced to distance himself after growing convinced that Simpson was monitoring their movements, including instances where he allegedly followed them to her Brentwood home.

The relationship ended abruptly after a disturbing dream led Perrulli to hide his keepsakes in a briefcase and withdraw from her life. The two briefly reunited at a 1993 holiday party hosted by the Jenner family, a meeting Perrulli describes as deeply uncomfortable given Simpson’s presence. He remained optimistic about a future reconciliation until he received news of her death six months later. Following the discovery of his old briefcase in 2024, Perrulli decided to publish his account to humanize Nicole, whom he characterizes as more than just a victim of a crime that dominated the 1994 headlines. O.J. Simpson, who was acquitted of the murders in 1995 but later found liable in civil court, died in 2024 at age 76.
