Bawcomville to Host Louisiana's First 24/7 Harm Reduction Vending Machine

The outdoor unit, located on Olive Street in West Monroe, will offer free, around-the-clock access to naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and various health kits. This installation marks a significant milestone in Louisiana’s public health strategy, as it is the first of its kind in the state. Beyond the automated distribution, the collaboration establishes a mobile clinic presence at the church site, providing behavioral health screenings, substance use support, and direct referrals to recovery programs.

Bawcomville, a community in Ouachita Parish where nearly half of the population lives below the federal poverty level, has historically faced systemic barriers to essential care. Dr. Monteic A. Sizer, executive director of NEDHSA, emphasized that the project is rooted in a long-term commitment to meeting residents where they live. Pastor Glenn Lenard of Redeemed at Calvary Ministries noted that the partnership serves as a vital bridge for those struggling with isolation and lack of resources, offering a tangible lifeline in a neighborhood often overlooked by traditional service providers. The initiative expands NEDHSA's existing regional network, which already utilizes drug take-back boxes and distribution centers to combat the state’s ongoing opioid crisis.
