The investigational therapy, currently in preclinical development, works by expressing full-length human dystrophin regardless of the specific genetic mutation present in a patient. By addressing the protein deficiency directly within muscle cells, the drug seeks to suppress local muscle dysfunction. Elixirgen is now finalizing preparations for upcoming clinical trials in the United States.

Should Nippon Shinyaku exercise its option and secure regulatory approval, its U.S. subsidiary, NS Pharma, will oversee the commercial launch of the treatment. The partnership was brokered by the NS Pharma Innovation Research Partnering team based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
