Leica Unveils SL3-P Full-Frame Camera and New L-Mount Optics

Leica has expanded its professional SL-System with the launch of the SL3-P, a 44-megapixel full-frame camera engineered for high-end photography and 8K cinema workflows. The release marks a technical shift for the German manufacturer, emphasizing a minimalist aesthetic and a hybrid autofocus system designed for both studio and field reliability.

At the core of the SL3-P is a 44-megapixel BSI sensor capable of 14 stops of dynamic range and 176-megapixel resolution via Multishot mode. The camera integrates a new hybrid autofocus system that merges phase detection, depth mapping, and contrast detection to track subjects across 819 AF points. For videographers, the unit supports 8K resolution in 3:2 format and integrates Apple ProRes codec recording, while an IP54-rated, all-metal body ensures durability in harsh conditions.

The system is supported by two new lenses: the Summilux-SL 50 f/1.4 ASPH. and the APO-Macro-Elmarit-SL 100 f/2.8. The 50mm prime distinguishes itself as one of the most compact autofocus lenses in its class, weighing 584g. Meanwhile, the 100mm macro honors a 1987 classic, offering a 1:1 reproduction ratio and apochromatic correction for edge-to-edge sharpness. The SL3-P is available immediately for $6,690, with the new glass arriving later this year.
