Huawei Debuts LUTERRA Grid-Forming Energy Storage Platform

At Intersolar Europe 2026, Huawei unveiled its next-generation LUTERRA energy storage system, marking a strategic transition from the previous LUNA brand. The new platform introduces a 1000 V AC architecture and an array capacity of 12.5 MW/50 MWh, designed to bolster grid stability as renewable energy penetration continues to climb.

Steven Zhou, President of Smart PV & ESS at Huawei Digital Power, emphasized that energy storage assets must evolve into grid-supporting infrastructure. The LUTERRA platform addresses this through five core technological breakthroughs, including a pioneering smart string architecture and silicon carbide (SiC) modules that boost conversion efficiency. A through-busbar design simplifies installation and capacity expansion, while smart distributed cooling improves heat dissipation by 100% and reduces operational noise by 40%.

Beyond hardware, the system integrates digital twin technology and AI to enhance state-of-health predictions, supporting power trading and maximizing lifecycle returns. The platform is built around four pillars: accelerated investment cycles, higher energy throughput, robust grid-forming capabilities—such as black start and inertia response—and C2G safety standards. Complementing the utility-scale release, the company also debuted the LUTERRA S2 for residential users and introduced a new global service strategy, leveraging AI assistants to manage plant maintenance and optimization throughout the operational lifecycle.
