Clay Aiken Reflects on 2006 On-Air Clash With Kelly Ripa

Two decades after a guest-hosting stint on Live with Regis and Kelly turned sour, Clay Aiken is revisiting the moment he placed his hand over Kelly Ripa’s mouth. The singer describes the 2006 incident as the most catastrophic week of his life, fueling a public firestorm that remains unresolved today.

The tension began when Aiken, then an American Idol alum, attempted a playful gesture during an interview segment. Ripa recoiled, publicly rebuking him by noting she didn’t know where his hand had been. The fallout intensified when Ripa later discussed the lack of respect shown to her with Regis Philbin, while Rosie O’Donnell weighed in on The View, characterizing Ripa’s response as homophobic. That appearance on The View ultimately led to Aiken being outed before he had personally shared his orientation with his family.

Aiken told the Hollywood Raw podcast that he and Ripa have not spoken since. While he recalls his publicist strategically leaking footage of Ripa touching Philbin’s mouth to mitigate the PR damage at the time, the personal rift never healed. Although Ripa eventually apologized for the situation being blown out of proportion and invited him back, Aiken claims he was effectively barred from returning to the show in subsequent years.
