Dr. Adam Kawalek Launches Digital Sick Note Platform SickSlip

Nearly one billion workdays are lost annually in the U.S. to illness, yet the process for verifying these absences remains tethered to archaic, paper-based systems. Los Angeles physician Adam Z. Kawalek is challenging this administrative friction with SickSlip, a new digital platform designed to automate and secure absence documentation.

The platform functions by moving the clinical intake process online, where requests are reviewed asynchronously by licensed physicians. Rather than requiring patients to visit a clinic solely for an administrative signature, SickSlip issues digitally signed notes that feature unique verification links and QR codes. This design allows employers and schools to confirm the authenticity of documentation without the typical hurdles associated with traditional doctor's notes.

Since its May 1 debut, the service has reached over 1,000 patients across 30 states. Dr. Kawalek, who maintains a medical staff position at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, argues that convenience does not necessitate a decline in rigor. By maintaining strict clinical and state licensing standards, the platform aims to provide a reliable alternative to the current, time-consuming model of verifying short-term illness. Beyond individual notes, the company is now moving to aggregate de-identified data, providing institutions with insights into workforce absence trends.
