Innoflight Avionics Power Artemis II Lunar Proximity Maneuvers

During the historic Artemis II mission, NASA’s Orion spacecraft successfully executed a 70-minute Rendezvous and Proximity Operations demonstration. The complex navigation exercise, which involved precise maneuvering near the Space Launch System’s Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, relied on the CFC-400XS flight computer developed by San Diego-based firm Innoflight.

The demonstration served as a vital proving ground for future docking capabilities required for lunar landers and deep-space infrastructure. Orion performed a series of both manual and automated navigation sequences, utilizing the CFC-400XS to manage critical guidance and control functions. Designed with a focus on low size, weight, and power, the system is engineered to maintain reliability in the harsh radiation environment of deep space.

Innoflight is currently under contract with Lockheed Martin to supply 26 of these units to support the Artemis II through Artemis V missions. The architecture of the CFC-400XS integrates a defense-grade AMD UltraScale+ MPSoC for high-performance processing alongside a radiation-hardened VORAGO Technologies VA4 microcontroller, which monitors system health and mitigates potential radiation-induced errors. According to Lance Jackola, the company's Orion Program Manager, the hardware has already established a footprint in Low Earth and Geosynchronous orbits, with over 50 units launched to date.
