Caterpillar Foundation expands STEM funding for U.S. classrooms

A new two-year grant from the Caterpillar Foundation will fund engineering and computer science programs in 13 U.S. communities starting in the 2026-27 school year. This partnership with Indianapolis-based Project Lead The Way aims to integrate industry-relevant curriculum into high school classrooms to better prepare students for modern workforce demands.

The initiative deepens a financial relationship that has already funneled over $1.45 million into the Project Lead The Way School Grant Program since 2022. To date, this funding has supported 26 schools, provided professional development for 29 teachers, and reached more than 4,700 students. The new funding package covers essential classroom requirements including equipment, technology, and specialized training for educators.

Participating schools across nine states—including Alabama, Georgia, and Texas—will implement curricula focused on high-demand skills like cybersecurity, data analysis, and industrial automation. By shifting from traditional textbook instruction to project-based learning, the program forces students to apply design-thinking strategies to real-world prototypes. Amanda Robertson of PLTW noted that the investment is intended to build the problem-solving confidence necessary for students to navigate a rapidly evolving job market. The Caterpillar Foundation, which has focused on community infrastructure since 1952, views this expansion as a vital link between classroom education and long-term economic adaptability for the next generation of workers.
