Clive Davis, Legendary Architect of Modern Music, Dies at 94

Clive Davis, the music executive whose uncanny instinct for talent shaped the careers of Janis Joplin, Whitney Houston, and Bruce Springsteen, died Monday at his Manhattan home. He was 94. His representative, Aliza Rabinoff, confirmed the death followed a brief hospitalization in late May.

Born in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights in 1932, Davis navigated a path from Harvard Law School to the helm of Columbia Records, where he ascended to the presidency by 1967. Known as the man with the golden ears, he revolutionized the industry by championing artists who defied conventional pop trends. His tenure at Columbia brought stars like Aerosmith and Earth, Wind & Fire to the global stage, cementing his reputation as an executive who prioritized raw musical vision over corporate safety.

His career saw a dramatic pivot in 1973 following his firing from Columbia amid disputed allegations of financial misconduct. Rather than retreating, Davis founded Arista Records in 1974. This second act proved his most influential, as he steered the meteoric rise of Whitney Houston and revitalized the legacies of Aretha Franklin and Carlos Santana. Beyond his label work, he established the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU, ensuring his methodology of artist development would reach future generations. Musicians including Debbie Gibson and Jermaine Dupri have since paid tribute to the man who served as a steady, transformative force in an industry defined by volatility.
