The Lincoln-based financial services firm continues to pivot toward a diversified strategy, emphasizing consumer lending and technology-driven education services. CEO Jeff Noordhoek noted that the quarter marked the first full period of contributions from the company's recent Canadian servicing acquisition. While legacy student loan portfolios continue to run off, Nelnet has aggressively expanded its consumer loan footprint, which grew to $1.21 billion as of June 30, 2026, up from $411.5 million a year prior.
Operating results were influenced by a $41.3 million provision for loan losses within the Nelnet Financial Services segment, primarily driven by the adoption of current expected credit loss methodology for newly acquired portfolios rather than credit deterioration. Meanwhile, Nelnet Bank saw its net income rise to $10.5 million, reversing a small loss from the second quarter of 2025. The company also maintained its capital return strategy, repurchasing 190,281 Class A common shares during the quarter and declaring a third-quarter dividend of $0.33 per share payable in September.
