The contribution is rooted in a personal history for the Michels family, whose daughter, Sophie, survived a rare and aggressive pediatric brain cancer after being diagnosed in 2012. Nearly 15 years later, the family aims to translate their experience into systemic improvements for oncology research. Tim and Barbara Michels emphasized that their investment targets the gap between limited treatment options and the need for reliable medical breakthroughs, specifically seeking to provide hope to families facing rare diagnoses.
MCW president and CEO Dr. John R. Raymond, Sr. noted that the gift positions the institution as a premier destination for top-tier clinical investigators. The resources are earmarked for four primary objectives: recruiting world-class precision oncology talent, upgrading technological infrastructure for clinical translation, training a new cohort of medical innovators, and extending early detection strategies to rural and underserved Wisconsin communities. A formal dedication ceremony for the new facility is scheduled for this fall.
