Indiana's Online Education Shift Gains Momentum With Class of 2026

The American Academy – Indiana marked a significant milestone on June 10, celebrating a graduating class nearly four times larger than its inaugural cohort. Held at the Basile Theatre in Indianapolis, the ceremony highlighted a surging demand for flexible, virtual learning alternatives among families across the state.

A total of 48 students completed their requirements during the 2025–26 academic year, with 29 attending the commencement ceremony. Many of these graduates utilized Indiana’s Choice Scholarship Program to access the school’s fully online curriculum, which serves students whose needs are not met by traditional classroom settings.

Principal Shannon Van Lente noted that the graduates showed exceptional resilience, with some finishing their diplomas ahead of schedule and others launching businesses while still enrolled. The program, a subsidiary of Graduation Alliance, allows students to balance academics with work and family commitments. Laura Helms, a board chairperson for Ivy Tech Community College, addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of the personalized path they took to earn their diplomas. Dr. Shawn Smith, CEO of Graduation Alliance, stated that the growth of the academy underscores the necessity of offering educational options that meet students in their individual circumstances.
