Trump Threatens Full Ground Invasion of Iran Over Strait of Hormuz Closure

President Donald Trump issued a series of extreme warnings on Sunday, threatening a full-scale ground invasion and the assassination of Iranian negotiators should Iran follow through on its pledge to shutter the Strait of Hormuz. The outburst marks a volatile escalation as regional tensions over the Lebanon conflict continue to deepen.

Speaking to Fox News correspondent Trey Yingst, Trump declared that if the waterway remains closed, Iran “won’t have a country,” while suggesting that negotiators involved in the blockade would not survive the encounter. These remarks arrive as Iran pushes back against U.S. demands, with President Masoud Pezeshkian asserting his nation’s right to uranium enrichment. Trump’s rhetoric signals a sharp pivot from his recent acknowledgement that Iran maintaining a nuclear energy program could be considered common sense.

This aggressive posture contradicts the administration’s own memorandum of understanding, which mandates that signatories refrain from the use or threat of force. The prospect of a ground war remains highly unpopular domestically, with polling indicating that a majority of Republicans oppose sending U.S. troops into the region. Military officials have reportedly shelved plans to occupy strategic sites like Kharg Island due to the high risk of American casualties.

Behind the scenes, the dynamic is complicated by Israel’s ongoing offensive in Lebanon. Trump has privately expressed frustration that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to rely on indiscriminate building destruction rather than securing a tactical victory over Hezbollah. Despite this friction, the White House has yet to leverage significant material consequences, such as halting military aid, to force compliance with a ceasefire. Trita Parsi of the Quincy Institute suggests that Israel is actively attempting to sabotage the U.S.-Iran peace process, fearing that a diplomatic resolution would fundamentally shift the regional balance of power against their strategic interests.
