Alexis Ohanian Faces Backlash Over UFC Event Attendance

Investor Alexis Ohanian is under fire for his attendance at a White House-hosted UFC event where a fighter directed a slur at former First Lady Michelle Obama. Despite Ohanian’s insistence that he was invited by corporate executives, critics are questioning his judgment given the event’s inflammatory environment.

Ohanian took to X to clarify his position, labeling the fighter’s derogatory comment as vile and inappropriate. He maintained that he was already departing the venue when the remark was made and welcomed UFC CEO Dana White’s subsequent condemnation of the incident. This explanation did little to quell the outrage from social media users, many of whom argued that as the husband of Serena Williams and father to two Black daughters, he should have refused the invitation entirely.

The event, dubbed UFC Freedom 250, was held on the White House South Lawn to celebrate a national milestone alongside Donald Trump’s 80th birthday. During a post-fight interview, fighter Josh Hokit referred to Michelle Obama as a man, a moment that drew immediate scrutiny after Trump appeared to offer a faint smile in response. Critics view the incident as part of a recurring pattern of hostility, pointing to Trump’s previous endorsement of social media posts that labeled the former First Lady an anti-white racist.

While Ohanian is currently facing intense public scrutiny, he has historically been a vocal defender of his wife. Earlier this year, he publicly rebuked internet users who accused Williams of skin-lightening, attributing the visual differences in her photos to lighting conditions. Despite his track record of supporting his family against public attacks, observers argue that his presence at this specific event reflects a disconnect between his personal values and his professional associations.
