Lawmakers Challenge $1.2 Trillion 'Golden Dome' Missile Shield

A group of ten Democratic lawmakers is demanding transparency from the Defense Department regarding President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, citing a Congressional Budget Office projection that estimates the project will cost taxpayers $1.2 trillion over the next two decades while lacking clear strategic architecture.

Led by Senators Ed Markey and Jeff Merkley alongside Representatives John Garamendi and Don Beyer, the group sent a formal inquiry to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday. The lawmakers argue that the administration has failed to provide the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) with the necessary technical specifications to verify the project's viability. The CBO has previously stated that the lack of data makes it impossible to accurately assess the long-term fiscal impact.

While the administration claims the system could be built for roughly $185 billion, the lawmakers dismissed this figure as unrealistic. The letter notes that even a $3 trillion investment would struggle to meet the administration's promise of neutralizing the entire missile threat to the U.S. homeland. Beyond the fiscal concerns, Senator Markey alleged in a social media post that the project serves as a vehicle to funnel federal funds to administration allies, specifically naming SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. The signatories are now calling for a full halt to the initiative and a return to more modest, bipartisan missile defense policies.
