Allegheny General Hospital Opens $19 Million Cardiac Expansion

Allegheny General Hospital has finalized a $19 million renovation of its cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs, centralizing patient care areas on a single floor. The expansion aims to streamline navigation for families and clinicians while providing the infrastructure necessary for emerging cardiac procedures like pulsed field ablation.

The project adds significant capacity to the hospital’s Cardiovascular Institute, which now operates three cath labs, three electrophysiology labs, two multiprocedural rooms, and a hybrid surgical suite. By consolidating registration, preoperative holding, and surgical spaces, the facility seeks to improve operational efficiency for the thousands of patients who travel from across Western Pennsylvania for heart care.

Akshay Khandelwal, chair of the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, noted that the upgraded suites allow for more minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment options. The labs support the Mario Lemieux Center for Heart Rhythm Care, which was established in 2024. These specialized areas utilize advanced imaging and mapping technologies to address complex heart rhythm disorders.

Central to the new capabilities is the introduction of pulsed field ablation (PFA) for atrial fibrillation. Unlike traditional thermal methods that rely on heat or extreme cold to target tissue, PFA uses high-intensity electrical pulses. Amit Thosani, director of the Mario Lemieux Center, stated that this method typically results in shorter hospital stays, reduced anesthesia time, and a lower risk of patient complications.
