Houston’s Third Ward Secures 90 Affordable Homes for Seniors

Sixty units in a new 90-apartment senior living complex in Houston’s Third Ward are reserved for residents displaced by the ongoing redevelopment of Cuney Homes. The project, a collaboration between the NHP Foundation and Trinity East Village CDC, aims to anchor long-term residents in a neighborhood facing rapid price surges.

The construction project, scheduled to break ground this summer with a 2027 completion date, represents the culmination of a seven-year effort to secure land adjacent to the Trinity East United Methodist Church. Designed for adults 55 and older, the community serves a demographic with an average income of approximately 41 percent of the Area Median Income. Beyond providing housing, the site will offer on-site resident services through Operation Pathways to help older adults maintain independence.

Financial backing for the development includes a mix of private and public investment, featuring support from the City of Houston, Rice University’s Real Estate Group, Bank of America, and Churchill Stateside Group. The Housing Alliance HTX played a pivotal role by providing 81 Project-Based Vouchers. For local stakeholders, the development is a strategy to preserve the social fabric of the historic district, ensuring that as redevelopment accelerates, the neighborhood’s original residents retain their foothold in the community.
