Alibaba data shows AI is fueling a surge in solo entrepreneurship

Seventy-one percent of applicants for Alibaba’s global CoCreate Pitch competition are now solo founders, a dramatic rise from 40% last year. The shift signals a fundamental change in business formation, as AI tools enable individuals to perform tasks that previously required entire teams of specialists across diverse industries.

Eighty-nine percent of these solo entrepreneurs report that AI is essential to their operations, filling gaps in industrial design, coding, and marketing. This trend transcends age, with usage rates exceeding 80% among Gen Z, Millennials, and Gen Xers alike. Liz Wang, Global Head of Commercial Strategy at Alibaba.com, notes that the technology allows a single person to accomplish in one day what once necessitated a team, effectively lowering the barrier to market entry.

Regional motivations vary significantly among the 15,000 applicants from 132 countries. In the United States, 35% of founders cited workplace burnout as their primary catalyst, while many prioritized brand aesthetics and 3D product rendering before securing manufacturing contracts. Conversely, UK applicants showed a high concentration of professionals from healthcare and engineering sectors, while French and German entrepreneurs focused heavily on sustainability. With the competition’s $1 million prize pool and the prominence of the 0-to-1 Startup track, the data confirms that AI agents are rapidly becoming the backbone of modern small-business infrastructure.
