In a pointed op-ed for USA Today, the Massachusetts Democrat argued that McMahon is effectively bypassing Congress by gutting the agency through mass layoffs and the reallocation of essential programs. Under the administration's current plan, the Department of Labor would assume responsibility for K-12 literacy, civics, and Title I funding—a move Warren labeled as a recipe for chaos. She warned that shifting oversight of reading readiness and core classroom support to staff without pedagogical experience will inevitably lead to larger class sizes and a critical shortage of instructional materials.
McMahon has framed this restructuring as her department's final mission, bolstered by presidential support. However, the administration’s actions now face significant legal headwinds. A coalition of labor unions, educators, and school districts has filed a lawsuit alleging that the dismantling process violates the Constitution and the Administrative Procedure Act. The plaintiffs argue that fragmenting education services across federal agencies destroys the synergy intended by Congress and leaves millions of students vulnerable to systemic failure.
