Susan Collins Defends Kavanaugh Vote as Challenger Mounts Opposition

When Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins told reporters Tuesday she holds no regrets for her pivotal vote to confirm Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, her Democratic challenger Graham Platner offered a sharp two-word rebuttal: "You should." The exchange reignited debate over the senator's role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

Collins maintained her stance on the 2018 confirmation despite acknowledging her disagreement with Justice Kavanaugh’s subsequent ruling in the Dobbs case. During the interview with News Center Maine, the five-term senator argued that the Supreme Court's decision to strip away federal abortion protections has not impacted her home state, a claim that ignores the current political landscape in Maine where Democrats hold full control of the legislature and executive branch.

Opposition to the senator's record has intensified as her reelection campaign progresses. Lauren French of the Senate Majority PAC criticized the focus on a single vote, citing Collins’ broader history of confirming dozens of anti-abortion federal judges and her decision to block the Women’s Health Protection Act. Platner, an oyster farmer and combat veteran, has centered his platform on the judiciary's shift to the right, advocating for structural changes including potential impeachment proceedings for justices embroiled in ethics scandals and the expansion of the Supreme Court to counter its current conservative supermajority.
