The lawsuit, supported by Ecojustice and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, contends that the federal government is failing to uphold its legal obligations by dismantling key policies while simultaneously promoting fossil fuel expansion. Plaintiffs argue that this shift renders the national climate plan obsolete, leaving the 2030 goals effectively unreachable.
Dr. Samantha Green, president of the physicians' group, described the policy reversals as a public health emergency, noting that communities are already suffering the consequences of extreme weather, including wildfires and heat domes. The legal action seeks a court order to force the government back into compliance with the Net-Zero act, which mandates science-based targets and regular progress reporting.
Public frustration has mounted as critics contrast Carney’s current legislative agenda with his previous rhetoric as a climate advocate. Youth applicants, including organizers from Montreal, Quebec, and Sudbury, Ontario, emphasized that the government's pivot represents an abdication of responsibility toward future generations. They maintain that without a credible plan, official climate commitments serve only as empty political promises while the physical impacts of environmental degradation continue to intensify.
