Generative AI Apps Hit 36 Billion Hours of Global Engagement

Global time spent on generative AI applications is set to more than double in the first half of 2026, reaching 36 billion hours. As user engagement surges, the market is shifting: ChatGPT has hit a record one billion monthly active users, even as its grip on total market share begins to loosen.

The rapid expansion of AI is rewriting the rules of mobile and web interaction. While ChatGPT secured its position as the fastest app to reach one billion monthly active users in May 2026, the competitive landscape is fragmenting. For the first time in March, ChatGPT’s True Audience market share dropped below 50%, with Google Gemini and Claude aggressively capturing new ground. Claude, in particular, has seen its U.S. audience share triple, fueled by a powerful web presence.

Monetization is following this engagement, with global in-app purchase revenue from AI-focused software expected to exceed $4 billion in the first half of 2026—a 36% jump from the previous half-year. This growth is driven by a transition toward premium, utility-focused subscriptions. Individual performance metrics underscore this shift, as Claude’s average revenue per user in the United States climbed from under $0.50 in September 2025 to $2.76 by May 2026.

Beyond entertainment and communication, AI is fundamentally altering the retail sector. Amazon’s AI assistant, Rufus, has become a primary driver of efficiency, with users converting at nearly double the rate of those who do not utilize the tool. This transformation is mirrored in the broader developer ecosystem; over 200,000 apps now emphasize AI in their descriptions, with these titles on track to accumulate 10 billion downloads during the first half of 2026.
