US Journalist and Activist Detained After West Bank Settler Assault

A US journalist and an Israeli-Russian activist remain in police custody following a violent encounter with armed settlers in the West Bank village of Umm al-Khair. The detainees, who were beaten and pepper-sprayed during the Wednesday incident, were reportedly denied medical treatment despite one participant losing consciousness multiple times.

The assault occurred in the Masafer Yatta region, where activist Adele Shoko reported that settlers threatened the group with firearms before stealing belongings and deploying pepper spray. According to Shoko, Andrey Khrzhanovskiy suffered severe injuries and repeatedly lost consciousness, yet authorities bypassed a hospital in favor of a police station. Footage captured Nathaniel, a journalist covering the occupation, shouting that he had been beaten as officers led him into custody.

This confrontation follows a similar attack less than two weeks ago involving Washington Post journalist Heidi Levine, who was assaulted while documenting raids on Palestinian olive groves. The frequency of such incidents has intensified significantly since October 2023, with human rights monitors noting over 1,000 deaths in the West Bank over the last three years. While government officials in Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration continue to push for regional annexation, observers highlight a pattern of IDF forces providing cover for settler raids rather than intervening to protect journalists or Palestinian communities.
